I just read this article on MSN about alternative certification. I think it's a great way to get people from other professions into the teaching field. With different backgrounds and experiences outside the classroom, maybe they can add a little something different than teachers who go through the normal certification process.

I have heard of this before in New Jersey I believe they call it an alternate route certification in education. I have had a few teachers that have gone the alternate route to get their education certification and I found a few problems with that. These teachers were never really prepared to be in a classroom with students. Some of them after 2 or 3 years adjusted to teaching, but for the most part many of them struggled with control in the classroom and lesson planning. These programs are good for people who have had experience in working with children in other settings such as athletic leagues and other organization because they have an acquired knowledge of how to deal with children. People coming out of the business world often have a hard time relating to education and children. Overall I have found the program ineffective because it does not fully prepare these people to be in a classroom, but ultimately it depends on how much a person wants to put into it.
